The Foundation
Was Established
with three
Primary Objectives:

To provide donors with a way of giving
that fullfills their financial and
charitable interests.

To build permanent funds to meet the
broad charitable
needs of the community.

To maintain needed nonprofit service delivery in the community.

After witnessing local charitable funds being directed out of the county, founder Sonny Paullus recognized a need for a local organization to meet the philanthropic needs of San Benito County residents. Mr. Paullus gathered a group of friends and business associates to discuss possibilities. After a period of several months the first board of directors was created and The Community Foundation of San Benito County was incorporated in early 1992. A majority of that first board continues to serve to this day.
Over a period of some 10 years, the Foundation has granted more than a quarter million dollars to individuals and organizations meeting recognized charitable needs in our country. While our work was good and worthwhile it became apparent to us that only an endowment fund would allow San Benito County residents the vehicle to provide perpetual benefits to their county - in other words we must transform ourselves into a true community foundation. Our two-year Benefactor's Campaign was the first step in that transformation.

After serving as president of the Foundation for its first 10 years, I have been elected chairman, where I will continue to work with Bernie Furman, our new president. Bernie brings impressive knowledge and energy to the Foundation, and I look forward to real progress under his leadership and that of our first executive director, Gary Byrne. Gary is well known and respected in our community, and our board is elated that he has joined us.
